I. International Congress on the History of Dioceses:
Territories and Communities in Contemporary History
Dates – 22-23-24 October 2025
Location – Universidade Católica Portuguesa (UCP) Campus Lisbon
The I. International Congress on the History of Dioceses, benefiting from the ongoing historiographical renewal, aims at presenting the state of the art on the study of dioceses, the transformation of the notion of “diocese” over time, and the relationship between dioceses, territories, and communities in contemporary history (20th-21st centuries). The present initiative has three main objectives. First, it aims at widening the historiographical reflection on the history of dioceses. Second, the congress will try to open a debate among scholars focussed on discussing and sharing research experiences and methodologies concerning this type of study. Third, the congress aims at making known to a larger public the ongoing or recently concluded projects on the history of dioceses in Portugal through a comparative perspective with other geographies, and in particular, those European countries that shared with Portugal similar historical paths and cultural features, such as Spain, Italy, and France.
The História, Territórios e Comunidades (CEF NOVA FCSH) research group and Centro de Estudos de História Religiosa (UCP) are the event organisers. The Congress will take place at the Universidade Católica Portuguesa (UCP) Campus in Lisbon with participation of Portuguese and International Scholars.
To broaden the Congress research paths, the organising committee invites proposals for individual 20 minutes papers on the following topics:
1. Constitution or extinction of dioceses in Portugal or in other geographies;
2. Protagonists in the establishment and/or restoration of dioceses;
3. Conflicts and disputes over ecclesiastical territories;
4. Church and social dynamics;
5. Archives and sources for the history of dioceses;
6. Profiles and mobility of the clergy;
7. Cathedral Chapters and Ecclesiastical Chambers;
8. Dioceses and secularization.
Proposals should be submitted until 7th September. Communication proposals must have: communication title, abstract (max. 3500 characters), author's name, affiliation, biographical note (750 characters) and 5 keywords. Paper may be delivered in these languages: English; French; Italian; Portuguese, and Spanish. Virtual presentation is possible for those who are unable to attend in person.
